Making patient involvement happen – how EUPATI educates patients.
Ivo Schauwecker, President of EUPATI Switzerland
Description
Active participation of patients in health and medical innovations research is a concept widely accepted. Research being carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ patients rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them (www.invo.org.uk) can lead to results not only scientifically valid, but also more relevant for the patients and public.
One of many challenges to implement patient and public engagement is the availability of willing and knowledgeable patients and patient representatives. EUPATI with its patient academy and manifold activities through the national platforms makes patient involvement happen through educating patients.
EUPATI CH is developing a "Swiss Module" to enable even more patients in Switzerland to gain basic and country specific education.
Only educated patients and patient representatives will be a strong voice among the many stakeholders and lobbies involved in the healthcare field.
