Innovation Management


Art produces thinking. It is not the mechanics or technical skill that create art – the secret lies within the process of introspection and different levels of contemplation that generate it.

Therefore, works of art may communicate political, spiritual or philosophical ideas, and create a sense of beauty or even distaste. Art navigates through the nature of perception, generating pleasure or strong emotions. And sometimes its purpose may also be seemingly non-existent.

At sitem-insel we are using the space in our Atrium A to allow artists to display their work and trigger the introspection as well as unfamiliar perspectives of the viewer.

Till Könneker

The collaboration between sitem-insel and Galerie SOON, tagged sitem-insel ArtConnection, features new high-quality art projects in sitem-insel’s public Atrium A every four months.

First up is Till Könneker, born in West Berlin in 1980, as the son of the author Marie-Luise Könneker and the artist Gernot Bubenik. Till has lived and worked in Bern, Switzerland, since his childhood. There is no simple way of classifying the works of the trained graphic artist. The passionate collector of useless and beautiful things experiments with different means and media.

The artist took pictures with a scanner in his immediate surroundings. "Working with the scanner in the garden was a natural choice for me because it is a good instrument for exact observations but still allows for imagination.” The scans show small, often unnoticed things; they let the viewer dive into an unknown world of “Close Encounters”, which is also the name of Könneker’s project of which 5 pictures are exhibited.

“This technique shows the world unadulterated and crystal-clear, yet the picture in the end appears almost unreal and surreal. The world is as it is but it could also be quite different…”

Renata Bünter

During the summer months Renata Bünter, born in Büren (Nidwalden, Switzerland) in 1962, and who lives and works in Bern since 1998, displayed two of her pieces of work.

The first work is part of the project "Seven Days", consisting of seven short video films, each of which can also stand alone. They are named after the days of the week, because they also emphasize the everyday and unspectacular nature of the featured activity. In these videos, the artist consciously brings about the moment of alienation, of irritation: She takes over the film locations, the sets and the requisites, some of them true to the original, and then has Rita Siegfried paint them illusionistically (en trompe-d'œil). She then shoots the scenes indoors with actors and actresses.

The video shown is the "Wednesday".

And here is what she says about her 2nd piece of art called “Die Luft ist anders #3”

“This current work consists of analogue silver gelatine photo prints on baryta paper, developed in the photo studio of Rafael Buess, Bern. The starting point: The almost formal perfection of the Seven Days, a work consisting of six film images, that I realized from 2012 to 2019, has oriented me again to the blur and the analog image. Starting from the idea of the camera obscura, I wanted to go one step further and bring the sharp images back into blurriness, the digital images back into the analog. This would then be the memory of memories. The darkroom almost functions as a camera obscura. The films are exposed by a beamer for a few seconds, creating a black and white image in which the movements cast slight shadows and create a scene that reminds us of a dream.”

What is the InnoForum?
The InnoForum is a new event series created by sitem-insel AG. It is dedicated to the sitem-insel platforms and to innovation. It was launched in May 2020.

Over the past year, the various platforms have gradually moved into the new sitem-insel building. To welcome all the platforms, onboard everyone and get to know each other, the famous Meet & Greet event series was created. Now that all the platforms have moved in, the remit of this series has come to an end, and hence this series has been terminated.

Over time, the need for interaction between the platforms and their stakeholders has evolved, which resulted in the creation of the InnoForum.

Features of the Innoforum
The purpose of the new event series is the presentation of the platforms and their innovations, the exchange between platforms and stakeholders, and finally, networking and matchmaking.

During an initial phase, the platforms will present themselves in turns, 2 platforms at a time. It is likely that this phase will take approximately a year before all platforms have had the opportunity to presented themselves.

Afterwards, the platforms will present their innovations to different professional and public audiences and exchange with them.

When will the InnoForum take place?
Every second Thursday of the month.

Registration for all attendees (in-house and external) is mandatory.

Each event will be announced separately and provide the necessary details for registration.

Galerie SOON

One objective of sitem-insel is to create a great environment for its Community to evolve and connect. We also seek the collaboration of different creative partners that inspire us to think and do things differently and help us generate unfamiliar perspectives.

The collaboration between sitem-insel and Galerie SOON, tagged sitem ArtConnection, will feature every 4 months high-quality art projects in sitem-insel’s public Atrium A.

Since 2010, the Galerie SOON promotes up-and-coming artists from Switzerland and brings international talents to Berne. The gallery works only with professional contemporary artists. The artists proposed in this series all have an attractive CV and are represented in renowned collections and institutions. The selected art projects are associated to the themes of  "science, research, bio-art, networking and innovation". The exhibitions are intended to provide a new and unusual view of the world or simply offer a short break from everyday work, and also be joyful and surprise.

Tobias Kienast

When we evaluated different alternatives for a shelf in the innovation@sitem office, Tobias came into my mind, as he seemed to have the right skill set. He did an outstanding job by incorporating all the requested specifications into a piece of original work that perfectly echoes the architecture of the building. You can find this must see prototype n=1 on the 1st floor, office O1.119. 

Meer AG Bern

In order to increase the interactivity in our Atrium A and to showcase prototypes of a different kind, we collaborate with Meer AG Bern. During 2020, they exhibit in turns furniture prototypes on various themes which range from conference seating to business lounges and garden furniture, all of which can be used and tested at leisure.

Design School Bern Biel / Schule für Gestaltung Bern Biel

For the design of  a special give-away, sitem-insel turned to the Design School Berne Biel. The 'Note-Play Book' that resulted from this collaboration was designed by students from the graphic and ceramic design classes in the context of their applied projects. It is probably the only Note-Play Book with flipbook. Thank you so much!

Gain access to hidden or unused potential  

An Open Innovation Platform allows you to extend your access to knowledge and competence beyond your traditional stakeholders during a so called campaign. Topics can go from idea generation or idea improvement to search for innovative solutions for a technical problem, sharing or discussing specific methodologies, access to ressources (e.g. lab instrument, 3D bioprinter) or to specialized staff for executing a challenging research project or generation of novel grant opportunities. 

Our activities 

During a pilot phase, we gained experience in running 3 campaigns: one focussed on ideas for collaborative work within the sitem-insel community, one searched for solutions in biological risk management and one explored future healthcare policies in chronic disease.

Project Antibiotika Round Table


The "Round Table Antibiotika" is an interdisciplinary group of experts from medicine, research and economics of almost all Swiss universities as well as committed personalities from industry.

Its aim is to drive Switzerland's contribution to innovation, research and development of new active substances. The development in this area, which has been stagnating for decades, shows that previous approaches and research programmes do not work well enough at national and international level. A better coordination and expansion of the activities supported by Switzerland for the development of market-ready antibiotics and diagnostics is needed.

Pushing the boundaries of Cost and Outcome analysis of Medical Technologies (COMED)

International joint project with six international partners (Università Commerciale Bocconi (IT), University of Hamburg (DE), University of Exeter (UK), Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (NL) Syreon Research Institute (HU)) with the overall aim of shifting the limits of existing methods for cost and outcome analysis of health technologies both within the framework of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and Health System Performance (HSP) and developing instruments to promote economic evaluation in policy-making. The project is funded by the European Commission within the framework of Horizon2020 (funding number 779306).

Project MARANO


Multidimensional estimation of regulatory effort and identification of optimization needs (MARANO) | Multidimensionale Abschätzung des Regulatorischen Aufwandes und Identifikation von Optimierungsbedarf (MARANO)

The MARANO project is supported by the "Bonny Stiftung für die Freiheit" in order to disseminate research findings from the field of regulatory affairs into practice. In particular, policy recommendations are to be derived that lead to regulatory improvements or simplifications. In this context, the MDR Solution Panel (formerly Swiss MDR/IVDR Forum) was established with the industry association Swissmedtech to discuss the new regulatory requirements of the new medical device and in-vitro diagnostics regulation with consultants, SMEs, representatives from the authorities and the scientific community. Furthermore, the project tries to quantify the regulatory effort due to the new regulations.

Managing High-Need, High-Cost Patients: An International Perspective (HNHC)

International collaborative project led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with 10 other international partners (The Commonwealth Fund (USA), Dutch Ministry of Health (NL), Institut de recherche et documentation en économie de la santé (FR), London School of Economics (UK), Health Foundation (UK), University of Technology Sydney (AU), OECD, Otago Business School (NZ), University of Bern (CH), University of Toronto (CAN), Unidad de Investigación en Políticas y Servicios de Salud (ES)) to assess the costs and resource consumption of certain patient groups, compare them internationally and derive political implications.

Project Smarter Healthcare (NRP 74)


Use of simulation modelling to improve care for patients with chronic conditions in Switzerland

Although more and more people are suffering from chronic conditions, the Swiss health care system is still strongly oriented towards acute care. In order to provide adequate services for this growing patient group, the health care system needs to be realigned to meet the actual needs. The aim of this project is to develop recommendations on how the current health care system can be better adapted to the care of patients with chronic conditions. A model of the current care system for patients with chronic conditions will be developed to test the impact of different health policy interventions on quality, cost of care, and patient reported outcomes.
